मराठीदेशाची आर्थिक राजधानी मुंबई शहर. श्रीमंतीचे वलय असलेला बांद्रा-कुर्ला कॉम्प्लेक्स विभाग. गगनचुंबी इमारतींच्या गर्दीत ‘आयबीएम’ या आयटी कंपनीत काम करणाऱ्या एका तरुणाची नजर आज संगणकावर खिळली होती. उच्चभ्रू राहणीमान, मुंबई शहरात फ्लॅट, गाडी आणि सुखवस्तू आयुष्य सोडून या तरुणाच्या डोक्यात शेतीचे ‘खूळ’ भरले होते. हे खूळच त्याला शाश्वत शेतीच्या प्रवासाकडे घेऊन जाणार होते.

He had a good life — a flat in Mumbai, a car, an enviable salary. But his mind was consumed by farming. What many called a foolish obsession was about to take him on an extraordinary journey toward sustainable agriculture.

शेतकरी होण्यासाठी नोकरी सोडायची होती. बटण दाबण्याआधी त्याने पत्नी मीनाला फोन केला. आयबीएममधील दहा वर्षांची नोकरी सोडून शेती करण्यासाठी मीनाने ठामपणे वेंकटला पाठिंबा दिला. वेंकटच्या राजीनाम्याने आयबीएमचे बंगळूर मुख्यालय ते अमेरिकेतील मुख्य कार्यालयातील सगळ्यांनाच धक्का बसला.
To become a farmer, Venkat first had to quit his job. Before pressing resign, he called his wife Meena — his co-creator and life partner on this journey. She stood by him firmly. His resignation sent shockwaves from IBM’s Bengaluru headquarters all the way to its offices in the United States.

Venkat and Meena had grown tired of the car, the luxury flat, and the glamour of Mumbai life. Their shared love of trekking in college had first brought them together, and it kept their connection to nature alive. They had trekked across Maharashtra and all of India. That bond deepened their attraction to agriculture.

The Struggle to Buy the Land
बॅंक बॅलन्स तपासला त्या वेळी फक्त दहा लाखाची रक्कम उरल्याचे लक्षात आले. डहाणूजवळ पेठगावात सुर्या नदीकाठी चार एकराची जमीन पाहिली. सरपंच चिंतूच्या आग्रहाने जमीन पाहिली, आवडली. आठ दिवस थांबल्यानंतर किंमत १६ वरून ८ लाखांवर उतरली. ५० हजार रुपयांची इसारा रक्कम अदा करून जमिनीचे साठेखत करून घेतले.
The bank balance showed only ₹10 lakh left. A four-acre plot on the banks of the Surya river near Peth, Palghar caught his eye. Village sarpanch Chintu insisted: “Come see it first, we’ll sort the price.” The riverbank land was beautiful. After strategic patience, the price fell from ₹16 lakh to ₹8 lakh. He paid ₹50,000 as token money and signed the agreement for sale.

The Legal Battle to Become a Farmer
महाराष्ट्रातील महसूल कायद्यानुसार शेती घेण्यासाठी शेतकरी असणे आवश्यक. डहाणूच्या प्रांत आणि ठाण्याच्या जिल्हाधिकारी कार्यालयात हेलपाटे वाढत होते. आजोबांच्या नावाने केरळमध्ये शेती होती. प्रथमच केरळमध्ये गाव गाठला. अखेर तहसीलदाराने इंग्रजीत शेतकरी दाखला दिला. भ्रष्ट महसूल कर्मचाऱ्यांचे शुक्लकाष्ठ पार पाडत शेवटी शेती खरेदी पूर्ण झाली.
Maharashtra’s revenue laws require a buyer of agricultural land to already be a farmer — a classic bureaucratic catch-22. Trips to offices in Dahanu and Thane multiplied. The solution came from Kerala: his grandfather had farmland registered there. Venkat travelled to his ancestral village for the first time, obtained an English-language farmer’s certificate, and — navigating corrupt revenue officials — eventually completed the purchase.

The Groundnut Experiment That Stunned the Village
दुसऱ्या वर्षी भुईमुगाची लागवड करण्याचा निर्णय घेतला. ‘महाबीज’तर्फे अख्ख्या शेंगा बियाणे म्हणून मिळाल्या. वेंकट-मीनाने एक दिवस शेंगा फोडण्याचा कार्यक्रम सुरू केला — पण दिवस ढळला, दीड पोती अजून उभी. ‘सृष्टी’ या गुजरातमधील संस्थेच्या प्रकाशनात गुजरातमधील शेतकऱ्याने थेट शेंगा पेरून समस्या सोडवल्याचे वाचले. वेंकटने तेच केले. सहाव्या दिवशी संपूर्ण शेत भुईमुगाने भरून गेले. विक्रमी १६ क्विंटल उत्पादन!
In his second year, Venkat and Meena spent a day shelling groundnut pods — and by evening, half the sacks still remained. A Gujarat-based publication described a farmer who solved the exact same problem by sowing whole pods directly. Venkat announced the plan; the village labourers laughed; the villagers called him mad. On day six, the entire field had germinated. While locals harvested six to seven quintals per acre, Venkat’s method yielded a record 16 quintals.

वैतरणा नदीकाठच्या सेंद्रिय शेतीचा विस्तार करताना वेंकट अय्यर केवळ स्वतःच्या शेतापुरते मर्यादित राहिले नाहीत. पेठ (पालघर) गावातील बारा महिलांच्या ‘नारी शक्ती’ बचत गटाला ते सक्रियपणे पाठिंबा देतात. या महिलांना आर्थिकदृष्ट्या स्वावलंबी करणे हे त्यांचे मुख्य ध्येय आहे. महिलांनी उभारलेल्या अन्न प्रक्रिया व पॅकिंग युनिटमध्ये वेंकट मार्गदर्शन करतात.
Venkat Iyer’s commitment to organic farming extends far beyond his own four acres. In the village of Peth, Palghar, he actively supports a 12-woman Self Help Group called Nari Shakti. His primary goal: to help make these women financially independent. He assists the group at their dedicated food processing and packing unit, guiding everything from production to packaging.

EnglishThe Nari Shakti women produce traditional, clean foods — handmade urad papad, pickles, dry snacks, and ladoos — all using high-quality ingredients. “We do not cut corners just to get the cost to a certain level as per the market requirements,” the women told Monks Bouffe during a visit in April 2024. Customer orders via WhatsApp are dispatched through India Post, which picks up from the local post office and delivers within 1–2 business days across Mumbai.

When Banks Said No to Farming
शेती खरेदीसाठी स्टेट बॅंक ऑफ इंडियामध्ये कर्जासाठी अर्ज केला. बिझनेस प्लॅन दाखवला. परंतु शेतीसाठी कर्ज म्हटल्यावर बॅंकेने माघार घेतली. नोकरीत असताना याच बॅंकेने मला विनातारण कार घेण्यासाठी १५ लाखांचे कर्ज दिले होते. माझ्यासारख्या शिकल्यासवरल्या व्यक्तीची ही अवस्था तर सर्वसामान्य शेतकऱ्यांची काय अवस्था असेल?
When short on funds, Venkat applied to State Bank of India for an agricultural loan. He presented a full business plan. The bank refused. “The same bank had given me a ₹15 lakh unsecured car loan when I was employed,” he says. “Which is more sustainable — farming or a car in Mumbai traffic? If an educated person like me faces this wall, what must ordinary farmers go through?”

वेंकट आणि समविचारी मित्रांनी ‘मोफ्का’ संस्थेची स्थापना केली — मुंबई ऑर्गनिक फार्मर्स अॅण्ड कंझ्युमर असोसिएशन. या संस्थेत आदिवासी शेतकऱ्यांनादेखील सहभागी करून घेण्यात आलेय. मुंबईतील अडीचशे कुटुंबे सदस्य आहेत आणि अजून ४५० ग्राहकांची प्रतीक्षायादी आहे. पैशाची आणि खरेदीची हमी दिल्याने आदिवासी शेतकऱ्यांच्या उत्पन्नात कमालीची वाढ झालीय.
Venkat co-founded MOFCA — the Mumbai Organic Farmers and Consumers Association — to connect surplus organic produce with conscious city consumers. Tribal farmers from the Palghar and Dahanu belt were brought into the network. Today, 250 Mumbai families pay ₹5,000 each as members and receive weekly organic baskets. A waiting list of 450 more families speaks to the demand. Pre-season price guarantees have dramatically increased tribal farmers’ incomes.
