At GLOBOIL India 2026, CPOPC flags biofuel-driven supply pressures, backs India’s domestic oilseed push, and announces a roundtable on how Indian consumers perceive palm oil

Mumbai, 30 September 2026 \u2014 The Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC), the intergovernmental body representing nations that together account for around 90 per cent of global palm oil production, has called for closer cooperation with India on reliable edible oil supply, sustainable production and credible consumer information.
Speaking at GLOBOIL India 2026 in Mumbai, CPOPC Secretary-General Izzana Salleh said India should not be viewed merely as a market. “India is much more than an export destination for palm oil producing countries,” she said. “It is a partner in our shared pursuit of food security, resilient supply chains, productive farmers and sustainable growth.”
Domestic push and imports can coexist
For India, the world’s largest importer of edible oils, the message carried a clear policy signal. CPOPC welcomed India’s efforts to expand domestic edible oil production and said stronger domestic capacity and dependable international supply can work together to secure long-term food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Council identified five practical areas for cooperation with Indian partners: oil palm agronomy, planting materials, smallholder productivity, traceability and sustainable sourcing. These are directly relevant to Indian growers under the oil palm expansion drive, where access to quality planting material and agronomic know-how remains a key concern.
Biofuel demand a new variable
Addressing the conference’s palm oil session, CPOPC Deputy Secretary-General Dr. Musdhalifah Machmud flagged a growing risk for importing countries: rising domestic demand for biofuels in producing nations.
“Food and energy security are both legitimate objectives,” she said. “As national biofuel policies evolve, transparency and dialogue will help producers and Indian buyers plan ahead. Improving productivity, particularly among smallholders, is also essential to strengthening long-term supply.”
Production up, but future supply not guaranteed
According to CPOPC, combined palm oil production in its member countries rose from about 66 million tonnes in 2021 to 73 million tonnes in 2025. However, the Council cautioned that future supply will depend on investment in replanting, better farm practices and farmer support, along with responsible management of domestic and export demand.
For Indian refiners, traders and ultimately consumers, this means supply from producing countries can no longer be taken for granted, strengthening the case for domestic oilseed self-reliance.
Roundtable on “Palm Oil-Free” claims
CPOPC also announced that on 1 October it will convene a stakeholder roundtable titled “Understanding Palm Oil Perceptions and Consumer Narratives in India,” jointly with the Asian Palm Oil Alliance (APOA), the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) and Solidaridad Asia.
The discussion will cover nutrition, sustainability, responsible sourcing and food marketing, and will examine how consumers interpret labels such as “Palm Oil-Free” and where clearer, evidence-based information may be needed. The organisers described it as a listening forum, with any follow-up to be decided after hearing the range of views.
“Our relationship with India cannot be built only around tonnes and prices,” Salleh said. “It also requires listening to Indian stakeholders, understanding consumer concerns and working together on credible information.”
The engagement builds on the cooperation CPOPC established with APOA and Solidaridad Asia in Mumbai in 2025.
